ANIMATION
MACHINES

I am really interested in the origins of animation, especially the development of Victorian animation machines, below you can see my phenakistoscope and zoetrope sculptures. I made the Phenakistoscope in 2011 for the Sculpture in Context Exhibition in the National Botanic Gardens, Dublin, it animates a bird flying. Thousands of exhibition visitors interacted with the piece during the time it was on display in one of giant Victorian glasshouses. The zoetrope is a large scale prototype for a public sculpture I hope to create in stainless steel, it animates a dancer. You can view a video of the zoetrope in action below the images.
